Research Assistant (part time, temporary) in Systems Analysis

IIASA advancing systems analysis (ASA) program


The ASA program aims to advance agile, realistic and relevant systems-analytical tools and methods, and facilitate a shared understanding of the capabilities and limits of these tools and methods with end users. To support our project Digital platforms, fair competition and sustainability transformations: Plausible futures (Dig-FaSt), we are looking for a part-time (24 hours per week) research assistant for period of eight months.

Main areas of responsibility:

  • Conduct review and critical analysis of the literature focusing on the economics of digital platform ecosystems and anti-trust legislation including the literature that uses mathematical modeling to analyze consequences of different policies
  • Provide summaries of different literature analyses and present these summaries at the project meetings and workshops
  • Draft relevant parts of the final project report
  • Support the project’s operations by assisting in organizing meetings and workshops and maintaining the contacts with partners
  • In line with the team spirit that prevails at IIASA, the incumbent may occasionally work on other tasks assigned by their superiors, that might not be directly related to this appointment but where the post holder has relevant experience and skills, and/or a shortage of immediate personnel capabilities requires such.

our requirements:

  • Min. undergraduate degree, ideally a university student in an advanced stage of their studies (preferably in a relevant field)
  • Background in economics, good understanding of the current challenges and opportunities related to the platformization of national and global economies
  • Enthusiasm about the topic and the possibility to contribute to real-life impact via research and science diplomacy on a highly controversial policy-relevant topic
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, fluent English – both spoken and written
  • High level of responsibility and the ability to adhere to deadlines.

appointment terms:

The selected candidate should be available to take up the position as soon as possible. We will offer an initial part-time (60% representing 24 hours per week) contract for eight months. Depending on the availability of funding, there may be a possibility to extend further.

This position is classified as "Scientific".


A minimum gross annual salary of € 32,139.00   (full time equivalent) which is exempt from income tax in Austria.

The advertised salary is:

  • Negotiable, based on the qualifications, skills and experience of the selected individual
  • Subject to deductions for health insurance and/or social security
  • Not directly comparable with other employers in Austria, due to the unique legal status and privileges granted to IIASA
  • Subject to the principle of income aggregation (Progressionsvorbehalt in German).
